Loren Schweninger is the Elizabeth Rosenthal Excellence Professor at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro, where he has taught since 1971. He has written about black property owners in the South, Southern slavery and free blacks, and most recently, divorce among the slaveholding class. He also directed the university’s Race and Slavery Petitions Project for eighteen years, including the creation of its Digital Library on American Slavery.
